PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY

 

HISTORY


   The second oldest institution of higher education in the state of Texas, this institution began in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for Colored Youth. Today, Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) University is a comprehensive, public, land-grant university of higher education and known as one of the nation's top producers of African-American engineers. Additionally, it has produced more African-American three-star generals than any other historically Black university in the country.

CAMPUS LIFE


   Prairie View A&M's main campus is located on a 1,500-acre site approximately 45 miles northwest of Houston, and students come from throughout the United States and many foreign countries, including China, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, India, and South Africa. Notable academic programs include degrees in agriculture, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, engineering technology, architecture, home economics, and nursing.  The latter is performed at the College of Nursing branch facility, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

 

   Prairie View A&M develop the Center for the Study and Prevention of Juvenile Crime and Delinquency, and was also designated by NASA as a national center for the study of radiation in space.
