Capers Memorial CME Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1832, it is the oldest African American church in Nashville; A Methodist minister, James Gwin, started preaching to local slaves around 1828-29; under his leadership, the African Mission continued to grow to a membership of 819 by 1833; in 1851, a lot to build a new church on Hynes Street and McCreary Street near the Nashville-Chattanooga Railway Depot was purchased; Capers Church also became the first local structure built exclusively for a black church; listed on the National Register of Historic Places

DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1863, it is Nashville’s oldest AME church

First Baptist Church - Capitol Hill
DESCRIPTION: The church was one of three descendants of First Colored Baptist Church, it was established in 1848 as a mission of the White First Baptist Church and led by Nelson Merry; Merry was Nashville’s first ordained Black minister; the church was one of six Black churches in this area before the Capital Hill Redevelopment Plan of the 1950s; the church was an important meeting place for leaders of the Civil Rights Movement

Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1887 as North College Street Baptist Church from a storefront Sunday School; the name later changed to Third Avenue Baptist Church; the new sancutuary was built in 1976and it is possibly the most cherished church in the historically Black Jefferson Street district
